Comics 9/23/09

Last week I bought some comics and now I'm finally getting around to saying something about them.

Possible spoilers below the fold.

Blackest Night: Superman #2 (of 3): I don't have much to say about this. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. Basically, the fight continues with Black Lanterns taunting people to get emotional reactions so the BL's can rip out their hearts and charge their rings. There's fighting, Black Lanterns and mayhem. And there's Psycho Pirate. No sign of BL Jonathan Kent, but the issue ends with Martha Kent holding a torch vowing to kick some BL ass. Meh.

Conan the Cimmerian #14: This was a one-shot story that bridges the gap between the last arc (Black Colossus) and the upcoming arc. I don't have the issue in front of me so I don't remember what it's going to be called. There's not a lot of actual Conan in this one. Most of the story centers around a skrae attacking his village in search of him. It wasn't a bad story, I guess. The art was okay but the coloring was bad. The colors were too washed out, I thought. This one could be easily skipped and certainly wouldn't win any new fans over.

Dectective Comics #857: This is the end of Elegy (part 4). Since 'Tec started featuring Batwoman, the visual aspect of this book has been great. I especially like the feel of the art when Kate Kane is Batwoman. There's absolutely nothing to criticize about that. The story was okay. Basically Batwoman and Alice fight it out over Gotham in a plan set to deliver poison gas. Oh, and Batwoman's military dad is being held prisoner. Fighting ensues, we find out that Alice is Batwoman's sister(!?), and then Alice falls out the plane to her (not really) comic book death. I may reread this in one sitting so that I can appreciate the art all at once. The story, over all, was pretty good in general. I'm interested in seeing where this whole Religion of Crime thing goes and learn more about Batwoman. So, mission accomplished on the part of the creative team. Oh, and the backup Question story is pretty good too. Nothing genre changing or anything but well done enough to keep me interested and buying.

Final Crisis Aftermath: Dance #5 (of 6): The less said about this book the better. I hate it. I tried to enjoy it and couldn't. I'll get the last one but I'm having a hard time understanding why I should care about the Super Young Team. They didn't bother me in Final Crisis, but here they're just boring and annoying.

Power Girl #5: I'm liking Power Girl so far. I've never really read much with her in it, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Now, at the fifth issue, I'm thinking I'll keep this one for a while. This is just a good, basic comic book. It doesn't take its self too seriously and there's enough action and humor to make for a good light read.

Supergirl #45: Supergirl was one of my favorite comics for a while. It's starting to drag with the whole New Krypton thing. She's still "hunting for Reactron," but there's not much progress. The whole world still thinks she, Nightwing and Flamebird killed Mon-El. I don't remember much about what happened in this issue. That can't be a good sign, can it? I'll keep buying if only to stay current with the New Krypton arc. I'd prefer less Nightwing and Flamebird, though, and more Supergirl kicking Reactron's ass.

Superman: Secret Origins #1 (of 6): Buy this comic. I can't find anything negative to say about this issue. I'd go so far to say that issue 1 of John's and Frank's revamp of Superman's origin is flawless. The art and writing are great. This is the best $3.99 I spent all week, probably all month. I can't wait for the next issue. That's all there is to it. I read it three times. Buy this comic.

Superman/Batman #64: This issue sucked raw, open ass. It's nothing but a boring teaser issue for either an arc or event months away. I hated every minute of reading it. Then I found out it leads to nothing (for now) and hated it even more. I'm getting bored with this comic in general.

Well, that's it. I don't have time to proofread this. Someone's come into my office so I have to stop blogging and work.

You'll get over it.

SEV:

I don't know what is up with retelling Superman's origins every few years. Wasn't 'Birthright' good?

I shouldn't say much, Marvel mucks around with character histories pretty intensely - most famously Spidey, and now Cap - but Spidey's really revamped the comic. I took a sneak peek at some future issues and now I'm worried. I saw something about the Clone Saga.

Honestly, I don't know. I didn't read Superman very often when I collected back in the day, so I don't know all of the details. I think there are issues that were left about his youth and other stuff from earlier rewrites and various crises. There's some speculation that the rewrites may have to do with the lawsuits. Maybe they just wanted to write out that period where he had a mullet.
